The beauty of the island captured the enlightened presence of the contemporary and Great Professor of the Christian religion Saint Nicodimos, who chose to associate it with the spiritual rising and approach to God.
This is how this important spiritual martyr of the earthly life came to the island and gave Skyropoula his blessing.
On the 23rd of August, along with the memory of the Virgin Mary, the Christian followers honour the homonymous building of the 17th century with exceptional spiritual gatherings and grace on a traditional way the choice of Saint Nicodimos, who blessed this island.
During the Turkish occupation the island was given to a French knight named De Rever who built a castle on the highest peak. Many legends have been written about his life and there are rumours among the shepherds of Skyros about a hidden treasure.
AREAThe island has an area of about, 4,200,000m2 (four million two hundred thousand square meters) and a diameter of two kilometres. It has three mountain peaks, the highest of which is 188 meters or approximately 600 feet. The northwest side is irregular. The other sides slope gently into a low sixteen kilometre coastline. The South side forms a small bay with pebbles and white sand. Additionally, it has two small bays which form a natural harbour. The colour of deep blue and turquoise waters appear as is processed by an illustrator, somewhere between a postcard and a psychedelic dream in tone.
MINERALSThere is a marble quarry that was used many years ago. Limestone is also found there in significant quantity.
WATERThe shepherds, who in the past exploited the island, got their water from two sources. One is near the church and the other is near what was previously the observation point. In the east side and near the sea, there is a small spring.
There are indications that water is of high quality in the area.
LANDSCAPEThere is an abundance of cedar in the area and in many parts of the island, there are also many wild olive trees. On one of the mountain peaks there is the small church of Saint Mary that was built in 1726.
On another mountain peak there is an abandoned guard house with many fig trees which was built as an observation point during World War II.
The island is also the home of many herds of wild goats.
TRANSPORTATIONThe distance from the port of Skyros to Skyropoula could be covered by a boat in fifteen minutes. There are regular flights with Olympic Airways from Spata airport in Athens (one of the best airports in Europe) to the large airport of Skyros. One could conclude that the distance between Athens and the island of Skyropoula by plane would be a little less than an hour travel time.
Since Skyropoula does not have a regular connection with Euboea, those who wish to go there travel approximately 30 minutes by motor launch from Skyros. However the island is situated exactly on the course of the ferry boats which go from Kimi to Skyros every day. It would be very easy to achieve regular communication with Euboea since there is relatively no deviation of those boats from their course.
